Ceadogán Rugmakers announce the launch of their latest collaboration with Cork artist Shane O’Driscoll
Shane is well known for his screen prints and large scale murals which can be found all around the country. He has exhibited throughout Ireland as well as internationally and has a number of works in the OPW collection.
“To realise my work in a series of rugs with the team at Ceadogán has been an amazing experience. Working within this craft and learning aboutthe process has been an eye opening journey. As an artist, it’s alwaysimportant to move in new directions and this has been such a rewarding experience creatively.” – Shane O’Driscoll, artist
Shane’s minimal screen printing style has really come up trumps in the creation of this bold and bright collection of rugs. The solid and beautifully balanced compositions are underscored by the sumptuous textures and passionate crafting of the team at Ceadogán bringing a three dimensional element to Shane’s printmaking style.
And where better to launch these designs than in the city of Cork? Yes this collection will have its first showing in conjunction with the Cork Design Pop festival from the 27th August. There are five stunning designs from Shane in limited editions of ten each.
There will be a selected display in the Brown Thomas windows on Caroline street, and Ceadogán will be exhibiting the full collection at the Metropole Hotel on McCurtain Street in Cork .
Sculptural work from Deirdre Breen will also feature in the exhibition and to add an element of surprize a site specific sculptural installation has been commissioned from artist and Cork native Rory Tangney.
“I always start with the materials rather than with any ‘idea’ of what I want to make. Through a hands-on process of experimentation and exploration I seek out new possibilities for the materials – these are concerned with aesthetics, form, texture, balance, contrast, structure, etc. In creating the work presented here I have utilised the materials from Ceadogan’s workshop and storeroom. A very intuitive making process has led to vibrant sculptural work which compliments the refined and playful compositions of Shane’s rugs.” – Rory Tangney, artist
“We have long blurred the lines between art craft and design and wanted to further push these rugs into a three dimensional space by including a sculptural element in our pop up exhibition which will show for a period of two weeks from the 27th August.” – Colm Kenny, maker at Ceadogán
As a family business Ceadogán Rugmakers holds its core values of tradition quality and sustainability very much at heart.
