Maree’s studio is based in the small rural village of Clonmore. The inspiration for Maree’s rugs is the surrounding landscape, rural existence, and the ritual of living and working in direct contact with nature.
Her initial studies are monochromatic. She deliberately chooses to eliminate the element of colour and to concentrate on how tone and the mark-making process alone can define form and space within a drawing. When she works her main concern lies with the mark.
“I am constantly looking at ways of enlarging the possibilities for mark making and increasing the likelihood of chance occurrences. What is important to me is that the spontaneity and energy of my initial observations remains evident in the rug, the drawing always comes first”
